Chapter 10 The Thing That Should Not Be

Cyvan was restless; he paced around muttering and grumbling and generally in a foul mood.

“There has got to be something I can do,” Cyvan muttered, “something god damn it.”

“You know,” Zalax said, who was no longer able to take Cyvan’s foul mood, “you should investigate Lord Reika, see what he’s really all about.”

Cyvan turned to look at Zalax, “and where the hell do you propose I look for this information?” he asked bitterly.

“Didn’t you say your old base had a library?” Zalax asked, “You could start there.”

Cyvan muttered something and nodded his head, apparently thinking.

“Yeah, he would’ve never had to worry about it there since he was always there,” said Cyvan, reluctantly talking himself into believing that he did indeed know exactly what he was talking about.

Jerking up suddenly, Cyvan makes his way to a medium sized ship and prepares to depart for the base from whence he had just came.

“I shouldn’t be too long,” Cyvan said, “take care of everything while I’m gone Zalax.”

“Certainly,” he responded.

With that Cyvan lifted off and made his way out into open space before making the jump to hyperspace.

(Time passes)

The ship came out of hyperspace right outside the planet’s orbit. Cyvan then began the descent onto the planet’s surface and furthermore for the eventual task of searching through Reika’s immense library. He landed several meters away from the base before making the rest of the way up to the ancient castle on foot. Before he knew it, his feet were taking along the familiar path inside the castle that lead to Reika’s personal library. After about 15 minutes of walking inside the immense castle, he came across an enormous bell shaped archway that led to Cyvan’s destination. Immediately after passing through the archway, Cyvan couldn’t help but stare in awe at the shelves upon shelves of books, star charts, diagrams, and more. He inwardly wondered if Reika had actually read all of these things or if he just merely collected them out of interest, either way it was irrelevant. He made his way to the back where a small sealed door led to the holocron room. Cyvan tried opening the door with his bare hands and found it an impossible task. Next, he tried to use the force to push the door out of his way, it still did not budge. Then, on a sudden stroke of genius, Cyvan through the force sent a wave of thought at the door saying, “open.” At once the jet black door slid open to reveal a small but deep square room where shelves of holocrons were stored.

“Now, to find which one contains what I’m looking for,” Cyvan said, a grin flashing across his face.

He sifted through holocrons on countless events and subjects that were of no importance to him, his mind focused only on finding out more about Reika. In the rear left corner of the room, several shelves back and hidden behind several holocrons clustered together, Cyvan found an old and dusty holocron. It had the appearance of being ancient, as if it would break when touched. Cyvan carefully lifted it from its fellows and took it carefully in his hands to examine it. It felt cold to the touch, as if whatever information lay inside it had not been accessed in quite some time. Using the same technique that he had used on the door, Cyvan, through the force, asked the holocron to open and play.
Unexpectedly, the holocron opened and displayed an image before Cyvan of an old Jedi master alone in a room, making this recording. Quietly, Cyvan sat down to listen to the recording.

“Here follows the tale of the jedi master who should not be,” the old man spoke in a low hoarse voice, “a jedi master who had enormous potential and was possibly the most purely brilliant jedi to have ever to have ever been at one point a member of the order. However, owing to the events I am about to describe, he has been erased from the archives as ever having been a member of this order.” “Here follows the story, of the jedi master Reika.”

“Reika came to us like any other young jedi, at the proper age and circumstances. He had no family, nor any memory of having a family. We assume him to be from Iridonia, however we cannot confirm anything.”

Cyvan scoffed, “A jedi? He was a jedi, and he had the balls to train a sith lord? This cannot be.”

The holocron continued.

“From an early age, it was clear that he had talent. However, unlike most children his age, he was more pensive than conflictive. He refused to attend lightsaber practices, calling them stupid and irrelevant. Instead, he spent his days meditating and communing with the force. He obviously had a great mind, one of the best this academy has seen in its history and is likely to ever see. However, his intelligence made him impossible to teach as he thought himself superior to everybody, in retrospect he probably was. He ate when he wanted, slept when he chose, and generally did only what he determined to be worth it. Despite his irrationalness, Reika rose quickly through the ranks. The more power he obtained, the more it impressed upon him a desire for knowledge, a quest to learn anything and everything. It became such that he had unrestricted access to the library and its files. He would spend hours, days, weeks on end reading and studying. The sith fascinated him. A culture of people devoted to exactly the opposite of the jedi. The more he read, the more he became obsessed with seeing the sith first-hand. It was then that he started going on excursions, unauthorized ones, to seek out the sith and study them, like they were a pack of banthas that he would observe in the wild. He eventually would begin fighting sith with nothing more than the force at his aid, as he had not been trained in how to handle a lightsaber. As time passed, Reika unofficially became a jedi master, although he never passed any kind of test or ordeal. With this turning point, he became obsessed with the philosophy of the jedi and sith, speaking out openly against both sides. For he knew of another path that could be taken, the path of the potentium.

“A potentium,” Cyvan grunted, “the fuck is that.”

“The potentiums were exiled from the jedi order for their radical belief in the existence of one force, no light side or dark side. The best of them, could actually access both sides of the force.”

“Use both sides of the force,” Cyvan exclaimed, “how is such a thing possible.”

“Reika’s studying took a new turn, and he became completely devoted to becoming a potentium. It is unknown if he actually achieved his goal or not. As soon as the council got wind of what he was planning, they ordered Reika to come before them and explain himself. In the week before he was scheduled to appear, Reika recorded a holocron of his own in which he recounted his learnings, philosophies, favorite books, everything about the time he had spent at the academy. He went before the council and when he was confronted with expulsion, Reika simply smiled. One of the masters who was on the council, who particularly detested Reika, actually attacked him. What followed will live in jedi lore for ages, Reika actually took out a lightsaber from inside his robes, to everyone’s shock, and dueled with the master. Now accounts vary, but let none of them fool you, I was there and can tell you exactly what happened.”

“Well then,” Cyvan said sarcastically yet with more than a hint of interest, “do tell us.”

“The duel lasted mere minutes, Reika shocked and completely overwhelmed the poor master and killed him in the council chamber with the rest of us too shocked and paralyzed to move. He then left the academy, never to be heard from again, or so we hoped.”

“Everything up until this point has been solid fact, I was there and can testify to it all. However, from this point on all that I have to say is what I have gathered from outside sources. Reika left the council and eventually joined the sith order.”

“What!” Cyvan spluttered, “an ex jedi joining the sith just like that.”

“He became proficient in the so called dark side and went on countless missions as a sith lord. In the end though, the dark side was not enough for him either and he betrayed the sith as well, though not before adding considerably to his holocron. He took with him secrets of sith powers long lost, biographies of great sith lords, and other information about the order. Thus, hunted by the Jedi and Sith, Reika had to get away and quick. He eventually chose a deep core world that was fit to his liking, and made course for solitude. This is where accounts of his life all but cease to exist He spent 15 years in the company of jedi, another 9 in the company of sith, for to end up spending countless years alone.”

As the holocron flickered, the hooded jedi master lowered his hood. From beneath it, Lord Reika stared out.

“I knew it was him,” Cyvan said.

“From here I shall detail my own independent discoveries,” Reika said.

“My education was not nearly sufficient, so i took it upon myself to explore some of the mysteries of the force.”

“Mysteries,” Cyvan pondered, “what mysteries?”

“The first thing I needed to do in order to survive was to establish a base of operations. I wanted to go somewhere that very few people would be able to find me. However, my quest was not so easy. I searched many worlds in vain trying to find a base. Rogue jedi and sith, sent no doubt on separate orders to eliminate their mistake, occasionally ran into me. Of those that found me, most were untalented and easily dispatched with. However, a few managed to put up a decent struggle. Having virtually no skill with a lightsaber, i defeated these challengers by using various force powers of which i was well adept in. Those few jedi and sith who put up a fight, were honored in death, by having their lightsaber taken by me. Eventually, I settled on base of operations, an old palace that would suit my needs. Upon arrival, I cleared the grounds and surrounding territory of any life forms i came across. After that chore was complete, I settled myself in and began my studying.”

Cyvan sat, watching the holocron, hardly breathing, entranced by his master’s image.

“My first course of action was to learn the art of lightsaber fighting. It is a crude art, to say the least, but helpful and effective nonetheless. So as i poured over my books and diagrams, trying to decide what form to learn, I realized that no matter what form i chose, there would be weaknesses that could be exploited. Instead, I chose to do something of which I have no record. I set myself to learn all 7 forms of combat, so as each form could protect the flaws of the other. I spent 1 year devoted to each style of fighting. I used exclusively one lightsaber per style in the beginning, with from II necessitating me to create my own weapon. I took the staff of an old wise decrepit jedi sage who i encountered
on my travels. He told me of the ancient potentium’s and of how to go about unlocking their potential. I could leave no trace of where I had been, so i had to kill the old man, but i took his staff and imbued it with the force and converted it into a makeshift lightsaber.”

“Clever,” Cyvan said.

“My next task, and a monumental one it was, was to become a potentium. I took the old man’s words and set myself to clearing my mind of perceptions of good and bad, light and dark. I eventually succeeded in clearing my mind of such things, and then I could truly feel the force flowing in every cell in my body. I felt supercharged, like I had a huge surge of energy flowing through me, filling me with power. From that point on, I could freely access all the powers of the force. At some point, I don’t recall when, I realized that my senses were dulling my force access. My eyesight in particular felt like a hindrance to me becoming more in tune with the force. So, i took my eyes. The pain was immense, but so was the reward. My other regular sensed became sharper, and vision through the force was precise.”

“Taking your own eyesight,” Cyvan muttered, “this guy’s fucked up.”

“My next major breakthrough did not come for many more years. It got to the point where I could lose myself and my identity completely in the force. While i was there, I could sense other people’s identities as well. Eventually, I created a way to mask my own identity by taking on the aura of someone else. As time grew on, I gained more control of this power, being able in the end to use it constantly. My most taxing discovery was that of being able to use the force with extreme mental focus, to distort space-time and matter. I could create a small wormhole through which I could return to my base. It took many more years of study and practice to be able to sustain the wormhole for any amount of time, and to allow any more than just myself to pass through.”

“I believe that the jedi and the sith are doomed to fall. The two will constantly fight and war until there is no one left from either side. They are too one-sided in their views and agendas. When I gain control, I will create a unified force order, disbanding both the jedi and sith orders.”

“Madness!” Cyvan growled.

“It’s like a giant game of dejarik, while the pawns are busy slaughtering each other on the front lines, I will sit back and quietly wait for my chance to seize complete control of the board. To achieve this end, no cost, no sacrifice is too great. They’re all just worthless pieces, disposable lives who’s only glory will be in helping me to further my own master plan,” Reika laughed, a high and cruel sound devoid of emotion and full of malicious intent.

With that, Cyvan shut off the holocron, and got up to leave without saying a word.
