To answer your question, yes, you can beat the game and yet not kill Bastila. The trick is while playing the game, talk to her as often as possible, building the relationship. You will eventually reach a point (before Malak captures her) where she will confess that she is attracted to you, even in love. This is an important part of the final confrontation. Before meeting Bastila for the final time on the Star Forge, make sure you save the game as a precaution.

During the conversation, there are a lot of options. You have to use the options that draw on your bond and remind her of her love. You can even leave yourself open to her attack in one part of the dialogue. The Persuade answers are not necessary, you can convince her to forsake the darkside without those. The save that i mentioned earlier can be used in case some of the answers don't convince her. at that point, go back to the save and restart the fight, and choose some different answers. If that doesn't work, I can probably go back in one of my save game files and find the exact dialogue options to turn her.
