Chapter I

The crimson lightsabers hummed in the darkness. Darth Gesine expertly tossed one double-bladed weapon into the air and caught it flawlessly as it spun back down. She stood in the middle of an ancient sparring chamber and her opponent was late. Suddenly, she tensed and listened, waiting.
The silence was abruptly shattered by the mechanical whirrs of a sparring droid. The metal sphere came to a stop an arm’s length from her fire-like blades. The droid beeped and lights flashed on its exterior in alarm as it discharged a bright burst of energy, aimed at the Sith’s chest. It was cleanly deflected and the droid was simultaneously sliced in half by the Dark Lord’s second double-bladed lightsaber.
Instantly, light flooded the sparring chamber. An automated, yet strangely life-like voice rang out.
“Enemy: Annihilated. Exercise: successfully completed. Blast doors: open.”
Darth Gesine, or Ayin Khaan was she was formerly known, swiftly turned on her heel and left, deactivating her four lightsabers as she entered the vacant halls of the Sith Academy on Korriban, the Forbidden Planet.
She entered the dormitories and retrieved her midnight black cloak and her survival pack which contained her few possessions. After surveying her dull and death-like surroundings, she exited the dormitories.
Gesine passed a shattered mirror and stopped in mid-step. She turned and looked at the hooded face staring back at her. Scowling, she stripped off her hood, allowing the pale, cold light to fall on her face. She traced a long scar that ran from the left side of her forehead, down across her eye, onto her cheek and ended under her chin. Another shorter scar started near the bridge of her nose and went diagonally across the same eye and ended just at her ear.
To the fools who had faced her in combat, no face, human or alien, was more disfigured and terrifying as hers. After studying the healed lacerations, the Sith Lord bowed her head as a hot tear coursed down her cheek. The tear hit the stone floor with a surprisingly loud noise. Jolted out of her brief sorrow and shame, bitterness took root.
Infuriated anew at her appearance, she pulled the hood back over her head, once more casting shadows over the wounds. Her anger strengthened by her ire, she left the Sith Academy and boarded her ship, the Phantom Rancor.
Easing herself into the pilot’s seat, she took off her cloak and ran her hands through her long, raven hair. Suddenly, the beeps and whirrs of a droid were audible from the communications console.
“T3-K4, report to the cockpit immediately.”
The astromech droid appeared in the doorway of the cockpit and beeped its greetings enthusiastically.
“Just get us off this rock, T3.” Her deep voice reverberated through the cockpit. T3-K4 made a sound that suggested slight fear; his Master wasn’t usually one of few words.
Once the small freighter was in hyperspace, Gesine wandered aimlessly throughout the ship, making sure that the cloaking device was activated. She came to the starboard dormitories and wearily sat down on the bed that occupied most of the room. She looked up at the hologram that was mounted on the wall. A beautiful girl in her early twenties stood in the arms of a tall, handsome man, about the same age. Both had lightsaber hilts dangling from there belts. There was a caption under the touching scene that read, “Ayin Khaan and Tash Sunaen”.
Darth Gesine stood and walked over to the hologram, captivated by the tenderness of it. Suddenly, her breathing quickened and she lashed out, striking the hologram projector with the back of her hand, hurling it into the adjacent wall.
“Why, Tash? Why did you betray me and leave me to die? Why?” she screamed at the smoking device. “Why did you say you loved me?” she whispered as she fell down on her bed. “Why?” she asked again, as the tears began to flow.
