300,000,000 metres per second.

Which if I'm correct is

187500 miles a second

Yes you do look into the past. Example


If the beetleguese, a star in the orion system, explodes in 2120. The star actually exploded around the time where the roman empire was collapsing. That should put things into perspective for ya.
