I think that she was a jedi that fell to the darkside but you learn in KOTOR 2 that she, Darth Nihilus and Darth Sion all became Sith Lords and built a Sith Academy on Malacore V. Darth Nihilus and Darth Sion turned on Kreia/Traya because she trusted them to much. They left her for dead and went out to rule the Galaxy and then the you kill all three of them in different parts of the game. I hope that cleared thinks up for you and I think that the Exile, Kreia/Traya, Darth Nihilus and Darth Sion where all in the Mandalorian War and served under Darth Revan.

i'm thinking that you're right, but i heard that the Ancient Sith built the academy on Malachor...could be wrong though, who knows

You may save the republic in KOTOR 1 but when you start KOTOR 2 you find out that Darth Revan was on the darkside and the republic and jedi are almost all destroyed.
