I don't know maybe he was head of an enclave for sith on some hidden world.

I'm probably wrong but it think Nihilus is a Sith not Dark Jedi the clan but part of the Sith Species which would explain extra speed odd force abilities in the cutscenes and his language.

I have worked for 3 years on a plan for SWKotOR III and I have sent it as a suggestion to LucasArts. If my idea is accepted tons of features would be added and it would be bigger. Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic III: The Secrets of the Star Forge. You would start out as a new recruit on a ship and the first level, tutorial would be you getting used to your job as bridge guard. Then you will talk with a person of opposite gender about Revan and the Exile mainly boy or girl. Then you get an annocment of a drill to ready you for real battle. Little do you know it's not a drill you and your bunkmate fight to the hanger and take the last surviving snub fighter to Nar Shaddaa the first world. You then learn about this strange world Revan visited has been destroyed. You have to get a pilot Atton from Kotor 2 to take you there. When you get there you must go into the temple like Revan did to get a rumored Star Map to a second Star Forge. As you leave the temple you encounter an huge wave of Sith the species not dark jedi. Then Revan and a band of Rakata save you and Revan Joins you.
