It's always weird for me to play as a female in games. Even in Mass Effect and Dragon Age. I never played as a female there. (Except for Lara Croft in Tomb Raider, for obvious reasons

Actually no. Without the mods you can't kill Carth before you kill Malak. You have to be in a relationship with him and he'll come onto the station when you're trying to escape and try to convince you to return to the light. Then you kill him.
