Chandler defense dominates Davis in 40-7 rout
MOORE - There's no secret to how Chandler won the 2A state championship. It's pretty simple. Its defense refused to let anyone else have it.

The team's fortunes have rode with its defense all season. Today it paid off in gold.

Look at it like this. Chandler (13-2) lost two of its first three games this year, allowing 72 total points (average of 24 per game) in the process. But in the last 12 games, the Lion defense allowed just 60 total points (five per game).

If you can't do the math, Davis can, and on Saturday the Wolves didn't need a calculator to know they had ran into the wrong team.

Chandler's defense rose to the occasion one last time, causing five turnovers and shutting down the vaunted Davis wishbone with a resounding 40-7 victory at Moore High School.

Ben Casey returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and runningback Brandon Arms rushed for four scores as the Lions captured the school's second football championship.

"Our defense deserves a lot of credit for the way it has played throughout the year," said Chandler coach Brent LaGere. "We were able to create some turnovers that put us in position to score. That was big."

The tone of the game was set early, and there wasn't any good news for Davis.

Five minutes into the game, the Wolves allowed a kickoff to be returned for a touchdown, fumbled twice and were down 13-0. Before the Davis fans had warm seats, the Chandler fans were on fire.

It took eleven seconds for Chandler to get the lead when Casey took the opening kick, made a loop around the field and sprinted virtually untouched 76 yards for a touchdown.

Davis fumbled away the ball on the ensuing kickoff, but escaped damage with a defensive stand.

The Wolves weren't as lucky the next go around.

On its first play from scrimmage, Davis was called for an illegal block and followed that up with another lost fumble on its own 25-yard line. Chandler responded with a six play scoring drive capped by an 11-yard touchdown pass from Craig Lewis to Ross Lane.

Despite the disastrous beginning, Davis was able to right the ship and pull to within 13-7 in the first quarter. The Wolves jumped on a Chandler fumble and turned it into seven points when Quincy Black finished a 33-yard drive to the end zone with a four-yard scoring run.

But from that moment on everything went Chandler's way. Brandon Arms punched in the final four Lion touchdowns while the defense did more damage.

Davis gained just 79 yards of total offense in the first half and 170 for the game. There was little room to run for the wishbone and going to the skies didn't prove any better as quarterback LaQuentin Black completed just 2 of 10 passes for 33 yards and one interception.

And the fumbles just kept on coming.

After fumbling away its first two possessions of the game, Davis coughed up another just before halftime, giving Chandler the ball on the Wolves 30-yard line. It didn't take long for Chandler to cash in as Lewis hit Jon Evans for 25 yards and Arms blasted in from five yards out for a 26-7 lead.

Arms scored two more touchdowns in the second half, both of which were set up by Davis turnovers.

Casey Smalley teed Chandler up for its first score in the second half when he intercepted a Black pass and returned it to the Davis 25. It took Arms just three carries to gobble up that yardage, giving Chandler a 33-7 lead with 9:02 left in the third.

Two possessions later Arms rumbled in from 12 yards out after Davis had turned the ball over on a fumbled punt return.

Arms finished with 120 yards rushing and four touchdowns on 16 carries. Smalley added 70 yards on 15 carries.

Quarterback Craig Lewis had a relatively quiet day; he completed 2 of 5 passes for 36 yards and one touchdown.

For Davis, there weren't many bright spots. LaQuentin Black was the team's leading rusher with 39 yards on 11 carries. Quincy Black added 30 yards on 10 carries. George Russell, one of Davis' bigger backs tallied just 14 yards on eight carries.

"Davis is a good team and to be able to contain them as well as we did was a key today," said LaGere. "I figured this would be a real tight game the whole way but the turnovers helped us get a lead and the defense was able to hold it there."

The Lions have been holding teams down for 12 games.

Now they get to hold up a trophy.
