Chapter 3
The Dawn of Darkness

(On the unknown planet)

“Pathetic fools, they know nothing of the coming storm.” snort the Taung

“I grow tried of this,” said the Zabrak, shutting of the holocron, “Come Cyvan we have much to do”

“Follow me, it is time I tested your strength” croaked the Zabrak

“Why not here?” inquired Cyvan “or are you leading me to a trap?”

“You assume too much,” the Zabrak said as he turned to face Cyvan “and think too little”

(Cyvan walks towards his master)

“Fine, but don’t think that I’m the only one who assumes too much.”

(The two stand facing each other with about two feet of space between them)

“I assume you know how to duel?” the Zabrak asked with more than a hint of sarcasm in his voice

“Yes,” barked Cyvan, “as a matter of fact i do know how.”

“Excellent,” the Zabrak said in hoarse tones.

“I want you to fight me with no reserves,” the Zabrak ordered, “come at me as though to kill me.”

“If you give anything less…” he trailed off, but the answer could be read plainly in his tone.

“Now my apprentice, draw your lightsaber and let us begin.”

(Cyvan gladly obliged and withdrew a curved black hilted lightsaber took it up and ignited it, the red blade shone in the dim lighting.)

“Ahh,” the Zabrak master exclaimed raising one eyebrow, “a juyo stance if I’m not mistaken.”

“And yet somehow different, interesting,” he muttered to himself

“So what if it is,” responded Cyvan, visibly flustered.

“Very well then,” said the Zabrak, more to himself than his apprentice.

(The Zabrak master sets himself in position, still with all his robes on and staff in his hands)

“I thought we were going to fight,” Cyvan said angrily, “why are your robes still on, and why haven’t you drawn your lightsaber?”

(The Zabrak master smiled, infuriating his apprentice even further)

“I won’t need to take these robes off to fight you,” he calmly responded, “and if it’s my lightsaber you want to see, then far be it from me to deny you the honor of seeing it.”

(With those words, from his staff roared a bright orange blade. The Zabrak then passed the staff into his right hand and assumed his stance, with the blade pointing to the ground. With his free hand he beckoned his hot-headed apprentice forward)

“FormII is I’m not mistaken” snarled Cyvan

“You’re right” Reika responded, smiling again

“I’ve only ever heard of the name and know enough to recognize opening stance.” said Cyvan, now removing his armor for good measure

“Then,” said the Zabrak, “let this be an education for you.”

“Now…. fight me!” he ordered.

With a primeval snarl Cyvan lunged at his master, his blade moving so fast it was crimson blur and he swung at his master, left, right, diagonal, up, diagonal, down. Every which way he swung his lightsaber. By contrast, the Zabrak master hadn’t moved much at all, and yet he had parried all of the younger man’s attacks as calmly and effortlessly as though he were fighting a training remote. With a roar of anger, Cyvan leaped into the air, intending to bring the full force of his lightsaber crashing down onto his master. This time, the zabrak knew he couldn’t simply block his apprentice’s blow, instead, he would have to let the younger man’s overzealousness and momentum do the work for him. Cyvan came down mere inches from his master, who had mad brief saber contact and immediately side-stepped, pitting all of Cyvan’s momentum against him and sending him crashing to the floor. Without hesitation, the zabrak swung at his apprentice. With no time to raise his blade in defense, no time to consciously think what to do, Cyvan reached his hand up, an ominous dark blue aura of crackling energy had enveloped his hand as he held his masters lightsaber at bay. The Zabrak, in momentary shock at seeing his swing blocked by this weird aura, broke contact and re-set his position. Cyvan was now panting heavily and his hand now looked slightly blackened and limp. Inwardly cursing himself, Cyvan raised up again lightsaber in hand, and ran towards his master. His swings were even more wild and unpredictable than before. However, the zabrak still appeared calm and cool, he could see his apprentice tiring with every strike he reversed.

“Cyvan,” the master said, “give up now, it is pointless to continue fighting me.”

“CURSE YOU,” screamed Cyvan, who let forth a volley of force lightning at his master

The Zabrak however, simply waved his hand and dissipated the energy.

This enraged the apprentice even further, and with a burst of dark side energy and hatred he sprung forward and hammered against his master’s lightsaber. The blade pressed so near the Zabrak’s face he could feel its intense heat on the surface of his skin.

“It’s time I ended this fight,” the Zabrak said with a tone of finality in his voice.

In one fluid movement the Zabrak pivoted on the spot and shoved Cyvan’s lightsaber up, momentarily stunning the apprentice. Then, so fast and deliberate that not even Cyvan realized what happened until it was too late, the Zabrak lord cut up and diagonal in one solid motion, the blade traveling up the younger man’s abdomen and chest, to the hand where the lightsaber was, slicing the hand in two along with the lightsaber, then the Zabrak pivoted his feet and turned once again, in the same fluid flawless motion as the first strike, and plunged his blade into the young man’s shoulders up to the hilt and then withdrew his blade to give a crimson makashii salute to his fallen apprentice.

“GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH,” screamed Cyvan, coughing and spitting up blood as he clutched, panting, trying to grasp the reality of what had just happened.

“Well boy,” the Zabrak said in a cold matter of fact voice pointing his still activated blade at Cyvan’s crouched and huddled form, “it seems our little duel is at an end.”

“Don’t try and get up,” the Zabrak ordered, seeing Cyvan’s pained efforts to try and make it to his feet.

“You won’t make it, and even if you did, what next?”

“I’m….. I’m….. nnnnn-not done yet,” groaned Cyvan

“Yes,” said the Zabrak, “you are.”

“Apart from the injuries to your hand and chest,” he went on, still in that cold matter of fact tone, “I severed the muscles in your shoulders, you couldn’t raise a lightsaber to me if you tried.”

“D-d-d-d-d-d-d didn’t y-you, h-hear me,” Cyvan groaned again, “I’m not finished,” and stood up still panting and wheezing.

“Your spirit is to be commended,” the Zabrak said, “but you are wasting your energy.”

“H-h-h-h-h-h-h-h how could….. you beat me….. s-s-s-s-s-s-s so easily,” Cyvan hissed.

“Simple,” his master said, still with no change in his voice, “you defeated yourself.”

“S-s-s-s-s stop talking circles you old fuck,” Cyvan half yelled half screamed, “what the hell does that mean?”

“It means boy, that I used my precision to counteract blind rage, simultaneously wearing you out, and keeping myself strong.”

“By the time the fight ended, you were so worn down, it was all too easy to beat you,” he finished explaining.

“You should consider yourself lucky,” the Zabrak went on, “every other apprentice who has come before me died when i tested their strength.”

“You did not; you have exceeded my expectations,” the Zabrak said, “and for that, I will now fully acknowledge you as my student, as my apprentice.”

“Within you lies great power Cyvan,” the Zabrak stated, “once it has been unleashed.”

“Together,” he whispered, “we could accomplish great things, together…. we could destroy the Jedi, and the republic, and bring the universe to it’s knees.”

“Yes master,” Cyvan said, bowing his head and kneeling on one knee.

“Now, rise my apprentice, and tend to your injuries, the Zabrak said, “for Lord Reika has plans for you.”
